2 Real spring days

I have just had 2 wonderful days out round the patch.

22nd April

A warm but overcast day saw a real influx of warblers to the patch, in fact I got well into double figures of BLACKCAP, and CHIFFCHAFF as well as a lone WILLOW WARBLER and a singing SEDGE WARBLER (I also think I heard a garden warbler but not 100% sure). But it was just so nice to wander around with bird song filling the air. Also of note was a GREY WAGTAIL.

No Cygnets yet but there are some hatched coot now in the area which is lovely top see.

Insects seemed to be creeping back into life as well, with a good few large Bee-Flies around as well as numbers of bees increasing including: Bombus Pascuorum, Bombus bohemicus, Bombus terrestris and an unidentified small bee (seen both days see images)

A gloriously warm day for my walk with my daughter, the sun was out and so were the butterflies, there were BRIMSTONE's everywhere, as well as quite a few PEACOCK and SMALL TORTOISESHELL, added to this were single COMMA, LARGE WHITE and SMALL WHITE, it really felt like spring had sprung.

Bird song was again dominated by warblers although I didn't walk as far (little legs get tired quickly) the same species were encountered with more willow warblers today. Total coot chick count seems to be 5.

The unidentified Bee

This is a small bee about 10mm long, not uncommon, were plenty about in a few locations, but I'm not sure these images will help identification or if it is even possible (Anyone with a recommendation on a book for bees/wasps etc as well as insect ID's I'd be happy to hear about them, I am lacking in these areas).

Lovely day

Whist yesterday was a lovely day I was forced to do some gardening so no walk (shame as I'm sure the area was alive with wildlife) I did see one Buzzard soaring over the house though so not wasted.

Today is not so sunny but in my garden I have quite a few Large Bee-Flies (also known as Dark-Edged Bee-Fly due o the wings) hanging around, not uncommon in any way, but always nice to see these pointy bee mimics.

Also had a good moth nigh - Mothin' in the garden 20/04/2013

Spring morning

Although windy my walk home this morning felt very spring like and as I arrived at the lake I was greeted by my first Willow Warbler of the year in full song, a wonderful sound especially when combined with Chiffchaff. The swan still awaits her new arrivals and there was little else of note in the high wind but a Lone swallow the other day it is really building towards spring (OK a slight lie).

2 days 1 post

For the last two days my daughter and I have managed a walk around the lake, and it must be said it is great to be outside. We have had contrasting weather though, yesterday was a real spring like walk, coats off, and birds/butterflies noticeable, today was wet and cold (again), still some interesting things seen.

A lovely day and we were very happy to be surrounded by singing Chiffchaff, always a pleasing sound and a reminder that it is in fact spring, I think we heard/saw at least 6 birds, we also heard a couple of separate water rail (presumable at least two pairs around the lake?). Also springlike were the amount of flowers everywhere and the spring buds appearing (finally) on the trees and bushes. Insect wise only a couple of Brimstone butterflies but always great to see anything on the wing like this.

Daisy, Daisy
The journey was really an excuse to see how our swans were doing and I'm pleased to report that they have 8 (eight) huge blue eggs in their nest ready for hatching and the male is chasing anything he can away from his area of lake (including a couple of Canada geese).

Well the weather has swapped again, constant drizzle and much colder, but let's be honest all this really means is more puddles to splash in Rain does not stop us going out!

Still plenty of Chiffchaff singing, and while stopping for a quick game of pooh sticks (it is almost compulsory now when we cross and small bridge), I say quick but the flow of water meant it actually took quite a while (I lost as always) I spotted something I have never seen before, a chiffchaff launching off a nearby bush and almost diving into the lake, but hovering just above to grab a drink?? very odd, wish I had had a longer lens to capture this weird behaviour.

Waiting for the stick

Anyway on to our Swan nest (just to make sure the eggs were still OK, and rightly enough mother swan was keeping them safe, but it was here we saw another first for the patch (for me at least) and an animal I haven't seen locally for many, many years, a WATER VOLE ran around the bank and past the nest before vanishing. Too quick for a photo (even if I had a long lens with me) but wonderful to see one of these rare voles, and something I may be able to find again and capture with some patience.

Motherly Love
Continuing around the lake there was not much else of any real note although as you will see my evil daughter wanted to splash me!
Evil girl waiting to splash her dad!

I'm bored of waiting now!
